Turkmenistan Rugs: From Elephant Paw to Turkmen Design
This particular Turkmen artifact originates in North-East Persia, border with the former Soviet Union and present-day Turkmenistan. This type of rug is clearly distinguished from any other Persian rugs as it plays on very few colors, mostly red, the design is rigorously geometric, and its structure consists of a wool pile knotted on a wool warp and weft. Therefore we have carpets with a predominantly red background with geometric designs (so-called “elephant paw” designs, or even “Turkmen rosetta”) in different darker shades. The structure is almost always entirely in wool, with all-over geometric designs, without a medallion. They are very soft and fluffy, and with their extremely fine knotting, they closely resemble velvet.
